To eat seasonally means choosing foods that are harvested at the current time of the year. The produce tastes fresher and can be more nutritious than consuming food that is out of season. Here is a list of some in-season produce for the summer, and ideas for how to consume some of them!
- Avocados
- Bell peppers
- Berries
- Cantaloupe
- Cherries
- Corn
- Cucumbers
- Green beans
- Honeydew melon
- Kiwi
- Okra
- Peaches
- Squash
- Tomatoes
- Watermelon
- Zucchini
Avocados
Smash ⅓ of an avocado with a fork and place it on top of a slice of toast. Add eggs in your favorite style and finish it off with salt and pepper to taste!
Bell Peppers
Bell peppers are greatly versatile, as they can be sautéed, roasted, grilled, or eaten raw! I enjoy pairing them with a dip, such as hummus!
Cherries
I love using frozen cherries in smoothies because they offer an abundance of antioxidants. Combine 1 cup of your milk of choice, 1 serving of protein powder, 1 banana, 1 T. flaxseed meal, 1 tsp. chia seeds and ¾ cup of frozen cherries. This smoothie is full of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats to make you feel fueled!
Okra
Okra is full of vitamin C and vitamin K. It can be enjoyed grilled, perfect as a side dish for a summer barbecue!
Zucchini
Using a spiralizer, you can turn a zucchini squash into “zoodles,” or zucchini noodles. Pair this with pesto or tomato sauce, grilled chicken, and tomatoes!
