Small lifestyle choices add up to affect how we feel and can reshape our outlook on life. That being said, there are a few big pillars to the foundation of self-care that can help be your guiding light. Let’s explore them below.

Be kind to yourself

The first pillar is simple. It’s right in the name. “Self-care.” That means through the acts you choose to add to your routine actively show yourself respect and kindness. If you haven’t felt like your usual self during this quarantine, you might fall into the trap of being frustrated with yourself. Instead, take the opportunity to be kind and more patient with yourself during this tough time.

Prioritize sleep, nutrition, and exercise

Another pillar is to prioritize the variables that can impact your mental and physical health. Sleep, diet, and exercise are key to feeling your best and promoting overall wellness. Since it’s nearly impossible to keep up ideal eating habits, sleep schedules, and fitness routines right now, start by focusing on one and build upon it. When you pick one area to prioritize, and the others will come more naturally.

Lean on others

If you’re losing your mind being in close quarters with loved ones, find ways to communicate what you need from them in order to stay calm and happy. A big part of self-care that’s often overlooked is the simple act of leaning on your loved ones without feeling like a burden. You know you’ll be there when they need you, so don’t shy away from your inner circle when you’re struggling. Knowing when to reach out when you need help is an important pillar to self-care. If you’re feeling particularly disconnected from your closest friends, schedule a weekly recurring date in your calendar to touch base with them.
