District 87 Receives FUTP60 Grant!

The Glenbard District 87 Wellness Committee is pleased to announce that it is the proud recipient of a $15,500 grant from Fuel Up to Play 60, a program founded by the Midwest Dairy Council and NFL, in collaboration with the USDA.  This initiative provides opportunities that empower students to take charge in ‘choosing good-for-you-foods’ and in exercising for at least 60 minutes per day. Fuel Up to Play 60’s nationwide funding-program offers schools up to $4,000 each to help increase awareness of and access to nutrient-rich foods and physical activity opportunities for students. Funding for this competitive program is provided by the Midwest Dairy Council.  By making changes in their daily school routines, today’s teens can make a difference — not only in their own lives, but also in their communities — by modeling and promoting healthy lifestyle choices.

The Fuel Up To Play 60 grant-funds will be used to support and expand the wellness-focused programs within the District:  from the Healthy Cooking Challenge, Live Life Well Week, and Students for Students Clubs, to various aspects of the Physical Education, Health, and Family & Consumer Science curricula. The exciting Fuel Up to Play 60 program focuses on healthy lifestyle changes, as it encourages teens to consume nutrient-rich foods and to achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, providing support for a variety of activities and real-world tools such as food service materials and equipment, nutrition and physical education materials, student and staff incentives, and development of new staff health and wellness protocols.

In commenting on the new grant funding, Glenbard District 87 School and Community Projects Coordinator Gilda Ross noted “We have always had a real commitment within the four Glenbard High Schools — representing 9,000 teens plus their parents/guardians and extended families — to promoting student-school wellness in the arenas of both diet and exercise, and the new programs which the  Fuel Up to Play 60 grant will support will greatly enhance and supplement the many initiatives that we have already implemented.  I am very excited to watch how our programs and offerings can now further evolve, to the benefit of both school and community.

It is important to demonstrate student and community support for this program and we encourage all students, staff and community members to register for Fuel Up to Play 60 at www.fueluptoplay60.com.  (just follow the prompts, and indicate your school).
