IOM Report Urges Daily Hour of Activity for Youth

The FUTP50 Partner Newsletter reported that the Institute of Medicine advocates for at least 60 minutes per day of vigorous or moderate-intensity physical activity for K–12 students. The agency recommends including activity during physical education class, recess, classroom activity breaks and active-learning opportunities. Only half of American children meet the recommended daily activity standards and 44% of administrators report cutting physical education to devote more time to tested subjects.  As reported in Education Week, research studies show that structured recess prompts healthier outcomes for children, including better behavior. New evidence shows 60 minutes of physical activity each day reduced the likelihood of obesity by 4.8%; reduction in weight was particularly successful among boys.

 

DCHD Launches Index To Track West Nile Virus

To help DuPage County residents protect themselves against West Nile virus (WNV), the DuPage County Health Department has created a Personal Protection Index (PPI) that will inform residents of the amount of WNV activity in the county, as well as the steps they can take to protect themselves.

“This groundbreaking alert system the Health Department is launching will educate the public about the potential risk of contracting West Nile virus,” said Linda Kurzawa, President of the Board of Health.  “The PPI will alert residents of WNV risk levels and advise them of the precautions they should take to protect themselves and their loved ones.”  Read more

Summer Travel Tips

Summer vacation season is arriving and the DuPage County Health Department reminds residents not to leave health and safety behind while on vacation.  The Health Department recommends these travel tips:

  • Ask your doctor or other healthcare provider about vaccinations you may need for any international areas you’ll be visiting. Plan early for international travel. The Health Department offers an international Travel Clinic. Call (630) 682-7400 for information.
  • If you regularly take any prescription or over-the-counter medicines, pack more than you think you’ll need. Carry important medicines with you in your purse or carry-on bag. Bring a copy of your prescriptions. Make sure your medicines will be allowed into the areas you’re visiting. Read more

The DuPage County Health Department reminds smokers that they can get help to quit by calling the Illinois Tobacco Quit line.

Quitting smoking is one of the most important things that people can do to improve their health. Call 1-866-QUIT YES (784-8937) to speak with a trained smoking cessation counselor. The counselor will help you:

  • Assess your needs.
  • Customize a quit plan.
  • Find free local resources.
  • Check with you to keep track of your progress.Tobacco use is one of the leading preventable causes of death. The global tobacco epidemic kills nearly six million people each year, of which more than 600,000 are people exposed to second-hand smoke.

Great Western Trail Bridges Ribbon Cutting POSTPOSED

The ribbon cutting ceremony and bike rally scheduled for May 25 has been postponed until August 6 and will be held in conjunction with National Night Out. The event could not be held as the project is not completed due to the large amount of rainfall and the lost work days.

Eating vegetables instead of meat lowers heart risk

Andrea Gerlin reported in the Daily Herald Newspaper on March 4th that vegetarians were 32 percent less likely to be hospitalized or die from heart disease than people who ate meat and fish, scientists at England’s Oxford University reported. The researchers followed almost 45,000 adults, one-third of them vegetarians, for an average of 11½ years and accounted for factors such as their age, whether they smoked, alcohol consumption, physical activity, education and socio-economic background, according to the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

“Probably most of the difference is accounted for by the fact that the vegetarians had lower cholesterol and lower blood pressure,” Francesca Crowe, one of the authors of the study and a nutritional epidemiologist at Oxford, said in a telephone interview. “Diet is an important determinant of heart disease.” Read more
