National Prescription Drug Take Back Day – Oct. 27

Residents can bring unwanted, unneeded, or expired prescription drugs for safe disposal to the Lombard Police Department at 235 E. Wilson Ave., on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back event addresses the vital public safety and public health issue of prescription drug abuse and accidental poisonings. Many Americans are not aware that expired or unwanted medicines commonly found in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends’ home medicine cabinets.

Many people do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medicines, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away, which are both unsafe. This event provides residents with a safe solution for drug disposal. The previous nine national wide Take-Back events have collected 4,823,251 pounds or 2,411 tons of drugs.

“This is a great opportunity for people to bring in their unwanted or expired prescription drugs,” said Lombard Police Chief Roy Newton. “I encourage residents to help keep Lombard safe by going through their medicine cabinets and bringing in medications to be properly disposed of.”
