Nearly 35 percent of children ages 2 to 19 are overweight or obese. As these children grow into adulthood they are at a much greater risk of developing and dying from preventable, chronic illnesses such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Also, research shows that fit kids learn better. Frequent, quality physical education contributes to better health outcomes AND higher academic achievement. 150 minutes of physical education per week is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s national recommendation for elementary school students.
This bill is a step in the right direction ensuring ALL students in Illinois receive the minimum amount of P.E. while also allowing schools districts the freedom of implementing this as it fits their schools.
